Cars and pedestrians on campus had to take detours after a gas leak on Museum Road that began at about 2:30 p.m.

Construction workers accidentally struck the gas line while working on a water line issue on Museum Road, said University Police spokesman Maj. Brad Barber.

No buildings were evacuated, but traffic was diverted from the area, which spanned the Museum Road portion from Gale Lemerand Drive to Center Drive.

The surrounding area, including directly in front of the New Physics Building, was permeated with the smell of gasoline.

By 7 p.m., the damage was repaired, but the road remained closed until 9:30 p.m.

“Crews worked diligently throughout the afternoon and repaired the damage by early evening,” Barber said.
