UF saw a slight decrease in on-campus theft during the 2014 Winter Break.
Of the 72 reported incidents, University Police spokesman Maj. Brad Barber said there were 12 thefts from Dec. 15 to Monday. Five of the thefts were items stolen from inside of buildings and two were items taken from cars. There were also four bikes stolen and one other miscellaneous theft, he said.
“Most of the thefts were items left inadvertently unattended,” he said. “It was good that we did not have any vehicles stolen like last year.”
During the 2013 Winter Break, there were 13 thefts, which included eight thefts from buildings, two from cars and three other thefts — but no bikes were stolen, he said. There were also nine vehicle thefts committed by people who were later arrested.
Barber said students should try to take their bikes and vehicles home during breaks if possible. They should also use hard locks instead of cable locks and park in well-lit areas.
“Do not leave your property unattended,” Barber said. “Keep your property within your possession at all times.”
