Deadline to submit proof of health insurance to UF is Friday

The deadline for students  who enrolled during or after Summer B to submit proof of health insurance is Friday, or they could face a fee and automatic enrollment in UF’s health insurance plan.

The Mandatory Health Insurance initiative went into effect at UF on June 30.

Students who enrolled at UF on or after June 30, or who completed one degree and moved to a new degree-seeking program, are required to show proof of health insurance.

Those who don’t show proof of insurance by the deadline will automatically be charged a fee to their student account, according to the UF Student Health Care Center.

These students could also be automatically enrolled for the Student Health Insurance Plan, said Catherine Seemann, the communications coordinator at the Student Health Care Center.

The fee is separate from the penalties that could result from lacking insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

Students can either enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan or complete a waiver to opt out and use their own insurance.

Students who enrolled at UF before or during Summer A 2014 are exempt from the health insurance requirement.

However, all current students have access to the services available at the center regardless of whether they have health insurance, Seemann said.

For students who have their own plans, the center encourages patients to contact their insurance companies to find out what their plans cover.

The health center offers services such as immunizations and physical therapy. It also has a pharmacy and a women’s clinic.

To show proof of insurance, students must submit a waiver online at studentinsurance.shcc.ufl.edu/waiver-instructions.
