As temperatures dip below freezing, Gainesville Fire Rescue offers tips

Just as Gators are coming out of Winter Break hibernation, today’s weather will have them scrambling back under the covers.

Temperatures are expected to rise to 46 degrees during the day, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will then dip below freezing.

National Weather Service meteorologist Angie Enyedi said  temperatures will plunge to 26 degrees Friday morning in the Gainesville area.

With such cold temperatures, Gainesville Fire Rescue issued a series of suggestions to keep you and your belongings safe during this briefly ice-age-like week.

Fires are a huge issue during extraordinarily cold periods, according to a statement from GFR. To avoid fires, GFR advises to keep flammable objects at least 3 feet away from heating equipment. It is also important to turn off heaters when leaving the room or going to bed and to never use ovens to heat homes.

Some Santa Fe College students have said they don’t like the cold weather, but others, like 18-year-old special education major Matthew Fernandez, said they enjoy it.

“Being from Miami, the scenery that’s changed by the weather has been beautiful — the leafless trees, the frost on the ground,” the Santa Fe freshman said. “But as far as physically, it’s affected me because I’m not used to waking up and it being 28 degrees.”
