Florida women’s tennis team is off to bright start in the beginning of their 2014-2015 season.
Florida has earned nine titles since during its fall season and still has another half of the season to go.
On multiple occasions, Florida has earned its titles by beating out its own players in the final game.
On one occurrence, sophomore Kourtney Keegan and freshman Brooke Austin went head-to-head at the Duke Invitational in Sept. in Cary, North Carolina. Austin came out with the win against Keegan (6-3, 6-1).
One of Florida’s most dominating player from the fall season is returning right-handed hitter, Belinda Woolcock.
Woolcock was the only Gator who made it to the final round of the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic. Woolcock and two other teammates — Brianna Morgan and Stefani Stojic — made it to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
The 5-foot-8 Melbourne, Australia local has a season high national ranking at 14 and in her freshman season was selected for NCAA Doubles Championship with Sofie Oyen and was presented the Evelyn Puckett Award for most improved player.
Woolcock has not only made a name for herself off the court but also has made it to the semi-final round of the two ITA tournaments she has played in this season.
Three Gators made it to the semi-finals of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships, Josie Kulman (tournament winner), Peggy Porter and Morgan (runner-up).
Overall, Florida has a handful of key players to contribute to more titles this season for the Gators.
After Florida took the doubles title on Nov. 9 at the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, the team will continue working towards another win at its next tournament on Jan. 11-15 for the Plantation 25K in Plantation, Florida.
Florida’s opens its regular season on Jan. 24 against Elon at 2 p.m. in the ITA Kickoff.
UF’s Southeastern Conference slate begins on Feb. 27 with a match against Alabama at the Ring Tennis Complex.
