I remember coming home for Winter Break my freshman year and being bombarded with questions from my family. If it wasn’t, “Why are you still single?,” it was, “When are you going to bring your boyfriend home?”
I would get so annoyed. Mainly because I didn’t have a boyfriend and the look of disapproval on my grandma’s face was unnerving and also because this was my month to do nothing but sit and eat pumpkin pie. They were ruining it for me.
I learned to ignore these questions and relax during breaks. Here’s what I usually do:
Take time for myself
When I’m at home, I will always take a day to read at Barnes & Noble or sit at Starbucks to do whatever work I’ve been wanting to do but didn’t have time for. It’s a super chill atmosphere, you have coffee to keep you company, and you can unwind in a way that you normally can’t at home.
Eat as much as you want
OK, so maybe you shouldn’t do this one the entire break but a day or two won’t hurt. My house is always full of holiday treats during break, and I don’t miss an opportunity to indulge. As long as you aren’t going overboard and you don’t mind taking a trip to the gym or a run around town, you’ll be fine.
Visit with old friends
The best part of childhood friends is they know you so well they won’t judge. They don’t care that you’re still single; in fact some of them encourage it because they want you to have fun during college. Take the time to hang out with them without the pressure from your parents.
Winter Break is something you should look forward to, not be hesitant toward. Go home, take my advice, and gear up for Spring!
