Smoke from the construction project at the J. Wayne Reitz Union set off a fire alarm Wednesday morning that resulted in the evacuation of the building.
At about 10 a.m. today, dust and smoke created when workers cut concrete on the fourth floor set off a fire alarm that alerted fire rescue and UFPD to the scene.
The building was evacuated for only a few minutes, said Eddie Daniels, executive director of the Reitz Union.
Several posts on Twitter illustrated confusion as to whether the evacuation was related to several tweets posted early Wednesday morning threatening a shooting at UF. UFPD believes the threat is low.
“It was a very minor issue, no danger whatsoever,” Daniels said. “It was absolutely in no way connected with the threats the university received.”
