UF will have two forums dedicated to educating students on police and community relations as well as this week’s midterm elections.
The Collective, a group of campus organizations, will host the forum on police relationships today at 7 p.m. in the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom. Tony Jones, Gainesville Chief of Police; Darren Baxley, University Police deputy chief; and Santa Fe College Chief of Police Ed Book will participate in a panel at the forum.
The event is a response to the events in Ferguson, Missouri, wrote Veleashia Smith, director of the Institute of Black Culture, in an email.
“This forum is a way for us to be proactive in working with local law enforcement to develop common language and open communications between officers and students,” Smith said.
The Bob Graham Center for Public Service and the Hispanic Student Association are also hosting an event today on the results and implications of the 2014 midterm elections. It starts at 6 p.m. in Pugh Hall.
Susan MacManus, political science professor at the University of South Florida, and Daniel Smith, a UF Research Foundation professor of political science, will be commentating.
Hispanic Student Association president Liana Guerra said being civically engaged is the best way to guarantee results in elections.
