A Gainesville man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after he broke into his neighbor’s house, robbed him and beat him with a shovel, police said.
When victim Keith Torres returned home shortly before 5 p.m., he saw a standing ladder underneath an open window outside his house at 5600 NW 27th St. When he went in his front door, he heard the back door open, according to a report.
Torres then went to the window and saw 52-year-old Larry Lynard Jackson running through the woods toward his own house, which sits directly to the west of Torres’ home.
When Torres went to Jackson’s home to ask him about the break-in, he saw his lantern and black skull cap on Jackson’s porch. Torres refused to leave without getting his belongings back, Gainesville Police spokesman Officer Ben Tobias wrote in an email. Jackson then hit Torres in the arm, leg and face with a shovel — giving him a cut lip and bruises on his wrist and leg.
When police arrived, they found 13 DVDs Torres had reported missing. Torres also reported two missing speakers, but those were not found inside Jackson’s house.
Jackson was arrested on charges of burglary, aggravated battery and grand theft. His bond is currently set at $175,000.
