Four days after Daniel Lavaughn Jerkins was arrested for aggravated domestic assault, he was arrested again after police said he picked up his 5-year-old son from school and later smoked a marijuana blunt in front of him Tuesday evening.

Because of the aggravated assault charges, the 28-year-old was not allowed to have unsupervised visits with his son, Gainesville Police spokesman Officer Ben Tobias wrote in an email. He also had a warrant out for felony battery charges.

The Department of Children and Families contacted police after a third party told them about Jerkins picking up his child, a report said.

When police arrived at Jerkins’ Oxford Manor apartment at about 7:30 p.m., they could see him smoking a blunt through the window in front of the 5-year-old, according to a report. There were two other children in the home at the time, ages 3 and 6. Police said when they opened the door, an “overwhelming smell of freshly burnt cannabis poured outside.”

Jerkins was arrested on battery charges and child abuse without great harm. He is being held on a $2,000 bond for child abuse charges. A bond has not been set for the battery charges.
