A Leon County Sheriff’s Office deputy was shot and killed Saturday morning after responding to a house fire.
The Sheriff’s Office, Tallahassee Police and Tallahassee Fire Department arrived at 3722 Caracus Court shortly after 10 a.m., according to a press release.
Upon arrival, the suspect — whose name has not been released by police — ambushed the deputies. The gunman shot and killed one of them immediately. He then turned the gun on a second deputy, but the shot was not fatal.
The suspect then grabbed the killed deputy’s gun and started walking up the street, shooting at the firefighters and other responders, according to the release.
Tallahassee Police ultimately shot and killed the gunman.
Gainesville Police showed their support on a Facebook post. “Our hearts are heavy today,” the post read. “The thoughts and prayers of the entire Gainesville Police Department are with the family and friends of the Leon County Sheriff’s Deputy killed in a gunfight earlier today.”
“Such a tragedy, on top of already dealing with the shooting on FSU campus,” one woman wrote on the department’s post. “Prayers for Tally.”
