Freshmen ask, seniors answer: Surviving midterms

Midterms can be bit overwhelming. From the overload of material to the stress of constant studying, we’ve been there. Here are a few tips to guide you through midterms:

1. Fine-tune your study habits. As discussed in last week’s blog, study habits are crucial for a painless college transition. Remember you aren’t in high school anymore, and your studying should reflect that. Be prepared. Your exams will go much more smoothly.

2. Eat healthy. This seems like a given but is, sadly, often overlooked. Drink plenty of water, don’t skip meals, and don’t live off of Starbucks from the Hub. You can get your caffeine fix with a white chocolate mocha, but five cups is bound to be unhealthy. Never underestimate the difference a decent breakfast can make before exams.

3. Manage your time wisely. Study time should be devoted to reviewing your course material — not daydreaming about this weekend’s football game. Set aside time to study, and don’t let anything interfere with that time. Take breaks every so often to clear your mind to get a fresh start.

4. Be prepared for stress. Stress is bound to happen. Just be ready to deal with it to ensure your stress level won’t affect your grades. Sometimes studying with friends takes the edge off. A night out or a couple of hours devoted to refreshing your mind with another activity you enjoy might ease your mind. Figure out what stress management method works for you, and don’t stray from it.

5. Go to office hours. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Your professors are there to help you. Ninety-eight percent of the time they are more than happy to answer your questions and guide you through the exam process.

Midterms mark the halfway point of your first semester at UF. If you have any questions or concerns, please submit them here.
