It seems like this positive trend of embracing your curves is coming full circle and biting some women in the butt, specifically those who don’t have one.
Recently, I came across “shaming” when Instagram deleted the account of a self-proclaimed #pizzasister. She was asked to remove her account because it didn’t comply with the app’s terms of use, specifically her violation against posting inappropriate photos.
The reality was that she was posting the same kinds of photos as her thin counterparts, but it seemed like photo-sharing app turned a blind eye to them.
Needless to say, the internet had a field day.
Let’s turn the tables though. Take this Instagram account that has 131,000+ followers, created for obvious comedic purposes, but some of the comments I saw were downright mean. A comment on one photo said:
“…Pretending to eat a mini cupcake whilst getting a manicure (at Barbie’s dream house no less) must have been tough. The only way to top it would have been a selfie.”
Where’s the support rally for the women pictured in these photos now?
I’m not bashing the Instagram account -- even though I may sound like it. I’m disappointed at the followers that made it about thin women not eating rather than the juxtaposition.
People like this continue perpetuating the idea that skinny girls don’t enjoy food and are unhealthy for personal entertainment. This account is only one example though.
Ultimately, it would be counterproductive for women to crawl back into the hole that made us judgmental of women’s bodies that aren’t thin in the first place. We’re re-routing a nasty habit, not resolving it.
No need to insert more “self-love” advice, sayings, etc. just respect one another and bring in the claws ladies. We’re trying to move forward with acceptance of ALL kinds of bodies, and not just society’s image of the “real woman.”
Disclaimer: I’m not thin, therefore ruling me out of the skinny girl advocate running. Nevertheless anything that bashes a woman’s figure (big or small) just rules as a no-no in my book.
