A deadly accident involving a cyclist occurred just before 5 p.m. Thursday, when a car struck the rider as he was crossing Southwest 20th Avenue, GPD spokesman officer Ben Tobias wrote in an email.

William Leon Bailey III, a 49-year-old Gainesville resident, was crossing Southwest 20th Avenue near Madison Pointe Apartments on his bicycle. He rode into the path of the 2008 silver Toyota Rav-4, driven by 60-year-old Janice Marie Wigington, of Trenton.

Wigington struck the rider in the middle of the roadway. There is no crosswalk near the point of impact.

Bailey suffered severe trauma on-scene. He was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital, where he later died.

Southwest 20th Avenue was closed due to the accident investigation from the time of the crash, 4:50 until 6:50 p.m.

At this time, there is no other information to release, and no charges have been filed. More information will be provided as it becomes available after a full investigation.
