A Gainesville pizza joint is celebrating the end of the semester with free slices.
Italian Gator Pizza by the Slice will give free pizza Monday to the first 1,000 people who come with the Gift Certificates and More app downloaded.
“They show the app, and they get the free slice,” said Joel Mills, owner of the restaurant, 1728 W. University Ave.
Slices will be given out between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Gift Certificates and More can be downloaded for free through the App Store and Google Play Store. The app offers free gift certificates to local businesses.
Miles was excited when Gift Certificates and More creator and UF alumnus Edward Lavagnino approached him about the idea. Lavanigno said Pizza by the Slice has offered certificates on the app for more than a year. He said Mills wanted to celebrate the end of the semester and give back to students.
“What better way than to give free food,” Lavanigno said.
Lorena Marrero, a 21-year-old UF psychology junior, said she will definitely download the app.
“I love Pizza by the Slice,” she said. “I go there almost every time I’m in Midtown.”
Nicole Castellanos, a 21-year-old hospitality major at Miami Dade College, tried the restaurant while on vacation.
“That place is the best,” she said. “I might just have to move here.”
