RecSports hosting volleyball tournament to benefit UF Health breast cancer research

UF RecSports is trying to spike breast cancer.

Hosting the first Big Pink Volleyball Tournament today at Southwest Recreation Center, money raised will go toward breast cancer research at UF Health Shands Hospital.

“They were looking for a partner so their funds could go to breast cancer locally,” said Brynn Huysman, development coordinator for the UF Health Cancer Center.

Each player from the six-person teams should make a requested minimum $5 donation, said Marty Dempsey, the tournament’s event coordinator. Teams will be playing with a pink kin-ball, which is bigger than a normal volleyball.

Local businesses have made contributions to the tournament to help fund the T-shirts that will be sold at the event.

“We’re really focusing on keeping expenses low so that way we can give as much money as possible to UF Health,” Dempsey said.
