Freshman Kourtney Keegan swings at the ball during the second day of the Bedford Cup on Oct. 11 at the Ring Tennis Complex.

On Day 2 of the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational, freshman Kourtney Keegan slid right into the singles semifinals.

In her two matches, she knocked off top-seeded Plaun Burgmans of Auburn and Lynn Kiro of Texas Tech.

Keegan fought hard for her win against Burgmans. It took her three sets to finally win, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2.

"The highlight for [Friday] was obviously Kourtney beating the No. 1 seed and getting into the semifinals tomorrow" assistant coach Dave Balogh said.

"She played tough, smart, and handled some pressure situations extremely well."

Keegan won her match against Kiro 6-4, 6-3.

Belinda Wooolcock and Stefani Stojic were both defeated Friday in singles. Woolcock won her first match in three sets, but she fell in the quarterfinals.

Stojic didn't reach the singles quarterfinals. She lost in her singles round of 16 match to FSU’s Daneika Borthwick, who is the second seed in the tournament.

On the doubles court, Stojic found a spark of momentum. She teamed up with Keegan for the first time and defeated the Tulsa duo of Saana Saarteinen and Renata Kuricova 8-6.

"Our doubles play was a bit up and down" Balogh said. "We did a great job of locking down at the end and being the most aggressive team."

Saturday kicks off Day 3 of the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational, which begins with the singles semifinals and concludes with doubles semifinals.
