Saturday makes two consecutive perfect days for Florida’s women’s tennis team at the Bedford Cup.
After finishing 9-0 on Friday, the Gators swept doubles and singles competition Saturday at the Ring Tennis Complex.
Senior Olivia Janowicz has a lot of reasons to celebrate. Not only is she the Bedford Cup’s top seed for the 64 singles draw, but she also picked up her 101st singles victory on Saturday.
“I couldn’t be happier,” Janowicz said.
Janowicz won her singles match against Bethune-Cookman’s Mina Matsuba in two sets (6-2, 6-1). With Stefani Stojic, she won her doubles match against Florida Gulf Coast University’s Bettina Botha and Johanna Sterkel 8-3. Janowicz feels that playing at home gives her extra momentum.
Janowicz and Stojic did not have to compete in the quarterfinals of doubles because their opponents from Florida A&M withdrew due to injury.
The duo of Kourtney Keegan and Belinda Woolcock also bagged its doubles match in an easy victory against University of South Florida’s Kayla Rizzolo and Loreto Alonso-Martinez, winning 8-2.
“Belinda and I mesh really well,” Keegan said. “We both have big serves and attack at the net. We just put the pressure on them and won most of the points.”
Because both Florida duos won their matches, they will have to face off against each other in Sunday’s final round of doubles.
“I have played my friends before, and it’s a fun experience,” Keegan said. “I’ll go out there and try my best. We play each other in practice so we know what to expect. We’ll just go out there and have fun.”
Janowicz and Keegan will also be competing against each other in the singles semifinals, followed by Woolcock against USF’s Olaya Garrido-Riyas. The winners of those matches will play for the main draw championship.
Stojic will be playing against Sarah Means of FGCU in her consolation singles semifinal match.
Sunday will wrap up the Bedford Cup, starting at 9 a.m. at Ring Tennis Complex. It begins with the final round of doubles followed by singles semifinals and finals.
