Sustainable UF is giving students and staff the opportunity to pick up weekly shares of produce on campus.
Registration is open for the Gator Community Supported Agriculture program, returning this fall with three farms for the 2013-2014 growing season, said Stephanie Sims, implementation coordinator with UF’s Office of Sustainability.
Swallowtail Farm, the Family Garden Organic Farm and Frog Song Organics are offering about 300 memberships total. Pickups for some of the farms will begin this month, Sims said.
Members pay a lump sum or installments to receive a weekly share of fresh produce from a local farm. The fee pays the farmer for production costs.
The cost for a membership depends on the farm chosen, length of the season and type of share purchased. On average, an individual share generally ranges from $20 to $25 a week.
Katelynn Smith, a 20-year-old UF architecture major, knew about CSAs from visiting a town that used the program.
“I think people around here would be interested in it,” she said.
This year, pickup will be at the all-decal lot off Bledsoe Drive near Southwest Recreation Center on Thursdays.
