The 1975 takes from different genres, creates magic

It’s safe to say that the suspense of The 1975’s first album, which was released Sept. 3, was well worth the wait. For this British boy band, it’s hard to pinpoint the band’s sound and vibe. By putting a new twist on the indie rock genre, the sexy quartet veers off the mainstream path with a new sound and an addictive first album.

After playing together for over a decade, the quartet finally released an eclectic album that ranges from catchy rock songs to 70s-pop melodies.

Based out of Manchester, England, Matthew Healy (vocals and guitar), Adam Hann (guitar), George Daniel (drums) and Ross MacDonald (bass), released four EPs early this year but released their full-length album Tuesday.

Inspired by musicians such as Michael Jackson, Sigur Ros, My Bloody Valentine and Talking Heads, the band morphed different genres, such as classic pop, classic rock, R&B etc, and created its own unique sound.

Starting off as typical pop-sounding song, “Chocolate” quickly turns into an upbeat melody with catchy lyrics and addictive harmonies that make you play it on repeat. Just like its stark title, “Sex” is an explicit but truthful song that you will become one of your new obsessions. “Girls” is a mix between their rock and pop vibe—the lyrics will stick in your head long after you finish listening to the song.  

With engaging, charismatic personalities on stage, The 1975 hypnotizes the audience and connects with the music. The band’s humble demeanor and original sound make this upcoming band worth checking out. And who doesn’t love a gorgeous Brit band that plays amazing music?
