Just as a groundhog knows the exact moment seasons switch, fashion-hungry globetrotters can smell when New York Fashion Week rolls around. To most people, this grand week feels overrated. But if you want to stay on trend, this is the week to find inspiration. I’ll break down the top trends for spring 2014, so you can start filling up your piggy bank, because these are looks you’ll love to have and it’s never too early to plan ahead.

  1. Bib tanks. Alright, don’t loose me now. These 90’s-styled shirts are flattering and fun, in a cropped shape. A fitted shape is best, but don’t think too tight. These look best with a high-waisted skirt or shorts.
  2. Marble prints. This a fun, relatively new print that hasn’t had much attention. Try this print with a high-wasted flowy skirt and plain tank. Let the print do the talking for you.
  3. Midriff baring tops. Crop tops were really popular this past summer, and it doesn’t seem like they’re going anywhere, according to the runways. Choose one that’s not too tight or short (it’s just a hint of skin that makes it flirty, not slutty) and pair a cropped-top with something high-waisted. You don’t want to expose too much stomach.
  4. Slouchy pants. Skinny jeans are taking a backseat as slouchy trousers take the spotlight. These can be tough to pull off, so my advice is to find a pair that is loose, but still slim-fitting (you don’t want to be swallowed in fabric).
  5. Whites. White is always a go-to, but it seemed to be all over the runways this season, and I’m not complaining. You can never go wrong with a white piece, just make sure the fit and cut is flattering.

In the end, trends always come and go. The key is to see how you can incorporate a fad  and make it your own. Runways are supposed to be grand and over-the-top; they’re a source of inspiration. They lead. They push the boundaries for you. So take from it what you will.
