Rachel McGovern’s campaigning paid off.
McGovern, a 21-year-old political science and geography senior, was elected at the national College Democrats of America’s convention in Washington, D.C., as the 2013-2014 National Council Chair on the CDA’s executive board.
She said she will now be the voice of the state federations on the executive board for the organization.
The CDA is a nationwide organization with the primary goal of registering voters. It is the official youth branch of the Democratic National Committee.
“My entire college career has been about CDA,” said McGovern, who had been campaigning for the position since June.
She has been involved with the organization since her freshman year, holding the position of Vice President of Florida College Democrats last year.
Matthew Metz, the National Director of Communications of the College Democrats of America, said he looked forward to working with McGovern.
“Having an Executive Board member from University of Florida speaks strongly to the school’s dedication to fostering a recognition of the importance of public service,” he said in a news release.
McGovern said she has always been a passionate Democrat with values in line with the Democratic Party.
“I knew I wanted to make a difference,” she said. “And I felt that getting involved with College Democrats of America at UF, then nationally, was the best way.”
