The first 500 people in the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom on Friday night will start their weekend with “Saturday Night Live” show writer Alan Zweibel.

Zweibel, a best-selling comedy writer, producer and author, will speak at the free Gator Nights event at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.

Zweibel was one of the original writers on “SNL” and has worked on productions such as “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Monk” and “Late Show with David Letterman.”

Students will be part of Zweibel’s presentation as he talks about Hollywood comedy writing. The event will conclude with a book signing at 9 p.m.

“It’s a good opportunity for students to get a few laughs in before finals,” said Inter-Residence Hall Association president Elliot Grasso, “and also to learn about how Hollywood functions and how these TV shows came to be.”

IRHA, the Jewish Student Union and Gator Nights are co-sponsoring Zweibel’s visit.

“I think it’s a really cool event to showcase all of the good things student organizations can do for students,” Grasso said.

UF economics senior Cory Yeffet, 20, said he’s interested in what Zweibel has to say.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the brains behind the Letterman show,” Yeffet said.
