Freshmen might want to wait a while before making plans for future Homecoming weekends.
The dates are far from being finalized, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Affairs Bernard Mair said after a Faculty Senate meeting Thursday. Mair had presented the yet-to-be-Senate-approved academic calendars for the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years as information items.
The calendars for 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 have Homecoming preliminarily scheduled for Oct. 9 and Oct. 10, respectively. On the 2016 calendar, it’s on Oct. 7, and in 2017, it’s Oct. 13.
These dates, though tentative, contrast with recent years’ Homecoming schedules. In 2011, Homecoming was Nov. 4. Last year, it was Nov. 8, which combined with Veteran’s Day gave students a four-day weekend. This arrangement will repeat for Homecoming 2013, which will also be Nov. 8.
The Senate has set a guideline that Homecoming should be in October when possible, Mair said, so that November isn’t chopped up with holidays.
“It’s an effort to preserve some sort of continuity in November,” he said.
Mair said he will come to the Senate with suggested Homecoming dates later. The ones on the calendars — both approved and not — are just placeholders.
