Wanted: Columnists and artists with opinions

The beginning of the Summer is always interesting. It’s a locals-only sort of time when Alachua County residents and students get to enjoy Gainesville’s quieter side.

The few students who remain are seasoned veterans of the UF experience. Whether they’re taking classes or just relaxing for a while, they know game days are crazy, the weather is crazy, and the French Fries are not a hotspot like their preview staffer told them.

To those few students remaining: The Alligator seeks your help!

The Alligator is searching for columnists and cartoonists for the Summer.

Whether you’re a future professional hoping to get some work published or just a student with an opinion, there’s a place at the Alligator for you.

We’re looking for sharp columnists who will offer perspective about current events.

We’re also looking for witty cartoonists who can make a statement or tease out a chuckle.

If you feel inspired to see your work published and aren’t afraid of the responsibility, then please apply.

Every columnist and cartoonist brings his or her own style to the Alligator. Whether it’s the more formal style of an academic or the more fanciful style of a traveling bard, there’s a place for it at the Alligator.

No matter what your style, your work should deliver a message. This is especially required of the opinion columnists. Columnists should make sure their stances are clear and that their writing is coherent.

If you want to apply, send in a couple of samples of what your weekly work might look like.

The application deadline is today, so make haste! Again, all applicants must be Santa Fe or UF students. If you’re not a Santa Fe or UF student or don’t think you’re up to the task of being a regular, then feel free to send in some guest work.

Guest columns can be written by anyone. Columns should be between 500 and 600 words and can be about any topic. If you’re a student, please submit your name, year, major and the school you attend with your column. If you reference any facts or statistics, make sure to cite them.

Guest cartoons are also welcome. Send us an email for the cartoon specifications.

Applicants who are not hired are highly encouraged to submit guest work. Remember, the more familiar we become with your work, the more likely you are at being hired in the future.

You’re also welcome to submit letters to the editor. Letters should be between 150 and 200 words.

Please include your name and any other relevant personal information, and send to opinions@alligator.org.
