From 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sustainable UF is hosting REthink Collection Day — an opportunity to donate unwanted clothes, food, household items and school supplies.
Items will be collected at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center near Gate 1 and the parking lot. The items will then be donated to charities. Personal hazardous waste and electronic waste will also be accepted and taken to the Alachua County Hazardous Waste Collection Facility. Among the items included are poisons, flammable liquids, corrosives, medications, brake fluid, stale gas, fluorescent lamps and unrepairable electronics, according to Sustainable UF’s website.
Kelly Amorgianos, a 20-year-old UF political science senior, took a sustainability course that sparked her interest in the environment.
“It’s awesome how the university has students involved with helping the environment,” she said.
Amorgianos said throughout her time at UF, she thought the campus had a great way of reminding people about the importance of saving energy, properly disposing waste and keeping the environment clean.
Vanessa Tritsarolis, 23, graduated from UF last year with a public relations degree and sustainability minor.
“It’s really important to educate students. They are the ones who will go out in the world and pass on information,” she said.
