UF and the Dean of Students Office will unveil the Collegiate Veterans Success Center on Tuesday in Yon Hall, Room 418.
To kick off veteran appreciation, UF Provost Joe Glover, Lt. Gen. John LeMoyne, Vice President of Student Affairs Dave Kratzer and Houston Bailey, a UF student veteran, will speak at 1:30 p.m. today at the Reitz Union Amphitheater. UF’s Collegiate Veterans Society aims to bring together collegiate veterans in the transition from military to college life.
Society President Matthew Davis, 25, said the center will become a hub for army veterans like himself.
“We’re not traditional students, so we come together and form our own social group,” the business finance senior said.
Jen Day Shaw, assistant vice president of student affairs and dean of students, wrote in an email that creating the new center was a team effort.
“We had a lot of help from a lot of people, including a planning team from across campus consisting of students, faculty, staff and community members,” she wrote.
The center will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Shaw said the main space has a kitchenette, comfortable chairs, a big screen TV and study rooms.
“This space will provide to our student veterans a place to access services, attend events like game viewing parties and workshops regarding translating their military service to civilian employers, study and especially have a place that is a home away from home,” Shaw wrote.
