The seventh annual Midnight Fun Run, which celebrates the end of the semester, is tonight.
Considering the recent tragedy at the Boston Marathon, Darcie Burde, assistant director of fitness for RecSports and event director, said UF RecSports is working with University Police to implement additional safety measures.
Sgt. Matt Davis said police officers will look for suspicious packages and activity during the event.
“[Our] diligence level and awareness will be higher because of what happened in Boston,” he said.
The 5K run or 1.5-mile walk, hosted by UF RecSports, is open to UF students and their guests. Burde hopes about 1,500 people will participate.
Check-in starts at 10 p.m. in front of the Stephen C. O’Connell Center Gate 2.
Participants must bring their Gator 1 Cards or other valid identification. UF students can register on-site for $12 with a check or cash. It costs $20 for guests.
The run begins at 11:59 p.m., and all participants will receive breakfast following the race.
Burde said there are no prizes for winners other than pride gained from finishing the race.
“We are as excited for anyone who finishes or even attempts the run as we are for the first person who crosses the finish line,” she said.
