At the final Student Senate meeting of the semester, senators’ goodbye speeches were overshadowed by one Replacement and Agenda Committee recommendation Tuesday night.
Several senators were concerned about Sen. Leah Miller’s appointment to the Rules and Ethics Committee.
In February, Miller was mired in scandal a in which she wrote an email that was leaked. As the Swamp Party liaison to its fraternity house representatives during last month’s Student Government elections, she wrote to 25 representatives asking them to collect “I Voted” stickers and supply the party with a $250 check.
The final lines of Miller’s email read: “DELETE THIS AFTER YOU GET THE INFORMATION!! WE CANT HAVE ANYTHING ON RECORD! Sketchy, but do it! Thanks!”
Sen. Paul O’Quinn said that although he voted in favor of Miller’s appointment as a District A senator, he would not support her nomination to the committee.
“It’s greedy in that capacity,” he said. “I think there’s a fine line.”
Sen. Joseph Michaels said many people get heated during election season.
“I don't think we should be judging someone on that specific character when they have so much more to offer,” he said.
The Senate approved Miller in a roll call vote with a majority of 39 yeas against 21 nays. Six senators abstained.
Miller declined to comment after the meeting.
