Looking for a few extra classes to hold your interest for your last few semesters? Maybe something that can boost your résumé? While only 16 to 20 credits, a minor is, well, anything but.

As someone with a wide variety of interests, my plan is to earn a minor or two so that I can still explore my additional passions without attending college forever (unfortunately, we all have to face the real world someday). To help you plan out your degree, here are some especially interesting minors that you won’t want to miss.

For the math major who secretly enjoys flipping through a thick book or thinking deep thoughts every now and then, check out the classics minor. Choose five courses from the wide selection offered by the department; most of the courses are part of either the Ancient Language or Classical Civilization track. Look into classes such as Roman Satire, Sport and Recreation in the Ancient World and even Introduction to Hieroglyphics.

Maybe ancient Greece isn’t really your thing. Maybe Europe is more your style. If you want some European flair on your résumé, grab a European Union studies minor. The program requires 18 credits of study including Politics and Institutions of the European Union and Seminar in European Union Studies, as well as a Europe-related internship or study abroad program. That’s right, you experience Europe both in and out of the classroom — not too bad for just a minor, am I right?

As Gators we are all leaders, but if you want to improve that intrinsic characteristic you should check out the Leadership minor. By taking 15 credits of courses focusing on the study of communications and ethics, you’ll be ready to represent the Gator Nation wherever you go.

I really want something more random, you say. Eclectic. Perhaps try Theatre Production for insight into set or lighting design. Want to add a business side to your career? The Entrepreneurship or Retailing minors may be for you!

The university offers over 100 minors, so you have an unparalleled opportunity to explore any additional passions or simply expand your education. Make your four years worth it and check them out!

You can find a cumulative list of all the minors offered at the University of Florida at https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/Pages/minors.aspx.
