Election week is here.
When you walk around campus, dozens of people from the Swamp Party and the Students Party will try to talk to you about Student Government. We know it’s annoying.
We wish we didn’t have to bother you, but SG elections are just too important.
Every semester, about $200 of your money goes to SG, assuming you take 12 credit hours.
Do you know how it’s spent?
Neither do we.
And we don’t know because it’s almost impossible to find out where our money goes unless you sit in the SG office and go through hundreds of pages of budget documents in binder after binder.
We think it should be much easier for you to see how your money is spent in SG. In fact, we think you should have a much bigger say in how each dollar of SG’s $18.2 million budget is spent each year.
This Tuesday and Wednesday, you have the opportunity to make your voice heard. You have the opportunity to make a statement about what you want from SG. You have the opportunity to vote.
We are running for the highest offices in SG because we love this university. And because we love this university, we care about changing it for the better. So here are our promises to you:
We promise to fight tuition increases.
We promise to freeze your Activity and Service Fee.
We promise to make the budget process fair and transparent.
We promise to make it easier for student organizations to receive funding.
We promise to make campus a safer place for all students.
We promise to strive to make UF the most sustainable campus in the country.
We promise to bring better food choices to campus.
We promise to make transportation by bus, car and bike more convenient for students.
We promise to make SG a place where all students are welcome.
The other party tends to echo some of our promises. But the difference between us and them is that they’ve had four years to make good on their promises, and unfortunately for UF students, they haven’t delivered.
Albert Einstein said insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
It’s time for something different in UF SG.
It’s time for the Students Party.
