Spring break: it pays to take vacation days

Every college student dreams of having an outrageous spring break, whether it would include drinking margaritas on the beach, gallivanting in New York City or building houses for Habitat for Humanity. All of these ideas that come crawling into our vacation obsessed minds have a cost.

Not every college student, not many actually, have the kind of budget to blow thousands on a lavish spring break adventure. Personally, I’m taking myself into the mountains for my vacation and hiking trails for FREE. Some friends of mine are going on a cruise to the Bahamas and some others are going to spend time with their family.

There are many options so here are some vacation ideas for the budget conscious, the full wallets, and even the givers. Here are spring break ideas for every budget:

<$100

As mentioned in one of my previous posts, there are many volunteering options available. There are plenty of options in Alachua County, but also many all over the 50 states. One week is a perfect amount of time to give back to the community.

Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, pet shelters and nursing homes could all use a hand in your community. Outside of your neighborhood there are volunteer programs such as WWOOF and Helpexchange. Check ‘em out if you want to lend a hand.

Another budget friendly idea would be a camping or hiking trip. Most camp grounds cost around $20 a night for a single family tent plot. This would make a pretty crazy, outdoors gathering for you and your friends or family.

$300 or more

Do you love the water? How about a cruise? A few of my friends will be going on a four night cruise to the Bahamas with Norwegian cruise line. Norwegian cruise line requires a 21 year old present in every room, which shouldn’t be hard to find! 18 and older can drink on the islands and in international waters, so if you’re into piña coladas, sun tans and boats, this is definitely something for you to try. Seriously, it is so cheap too, why not?

If you get sea sick easily, you can always just have a beach week in Panama City. Rent a house with a few friends or get a hotel room for a few days and experience a real spring break beach week like we all used to see on MTV Spring Break. Hundreds of college students go to Panama City for spring break it is nearly a college tradition.

$1,000 or more

If you have the cash flow, why not book a flight to Miami or New York City? This would require a pretty hefty bank account and unless you know some people in the city you will have to splurge for a hotel. Experience the city night life and outrageous adventures in new places. Four star restaurants, Broadway plays, Miami Beach, whatever may come your way.
