Gainesville Police is investigating a Sunday morning burglary at a downtown apartment complex that left a UF graduate student injured and sparked authorities to send out a UF Alert to students, faculty and staff.
Officers responded to the Continuum apartment complex, located in the 400 block of West University Avenue, and found the victim with a cut on her head and a pool of blood on her living room floor.
The woman told police that just after she returned home from the Grog House Bar & Grill at about 2:45 a.m. Sunday, she heard a knock at her front door.
She answered it, and a man forced himself into her apartment, punched her in the head and ran away from the complex, said GPD spokesman Officer Ben Tobias.
Tobias said because the man didn’t say anything to the woman at the time of the attack, police are ruling out sexual battery and robbery as a possible motive.
Because the apartment complex is affiliated with UF’s Housing and Residence Education, university officials sent out a UF Alert at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday to inform students, faculty and staff about the incident.
The message also reminded recipients to keep their residences locked and to make sure they know who is at the door before answering it.
