Police arrest woman after she left child in apartment parking lot

A Gainesville woman was arrested Tuesday afternoon after she allegedly left her 4-year-old child in an apartment complex parking lot.

Gainesville Police charged Jasmine Gane Jemison, 22, of 1725 NE Eighth Ave., with child neglect after a witness found the boy walking down Southeast 15th Street by himself, according to a GPD arrest report.

Jemison left her son in a Carver Gardens Apartments parking lot, on the 1100 block of Southeast 15th Street, and told him to go to an acquaintance’s apartment while she ran an errand, said GPD spokesman Officer Ben Tobias.

The acquaintance let the boy into his apartment but told police he didn’t know he was supposed to be watching him, Tobias said.

The boy left the apartment about 35 minutes later and started to walk down Southeast 15th Street crying, Tobias said.

A witness saw the boy and called police, who responded to the 800 block of SE 15th Street, about a half-mile away from the apartment complex, according to the report.

When police confronted Jemison, she said she had an adult — the acquaintance — caring for the child while she went out.

Police arrested and later booked Jemison into the Alachua County Jail at about 5 p.m. Tuesday. She was released at about 2 p.m. Wednesday on her own recognizance.
