Well, in terms of love, what is the first word that pops into your head? The adjectives I have in mind are in the name of a movie itself – “Crazy, Stupid Love.” In case you lovers are too blinded by strong and endless love to see what good love movies are out there, I volunteer to be the person who recommends some good flicks for you and your potential date.
Don’t start to yawn. I am not going to throw at you cheesy romantic flicks like “Titanic,” no offense if you are a James Cameron fan. “Titanic” is just not the right choice for dates since it’s too long and the lines are too cheesy. Unless you really have a bond with this movie, I do not recommend it as a date movie. Remember, the first and foremost requirement for a date movie is: It can’t be too long, especially if you have only been out with your special someone one or two times.
The ideal length for a date movie is within 120 minutes. Don’t even consider the recently released “Cloud Atlas,” which lasts more than 160 minutes, a good date movie. “Crazy, Stupid Love” is a good pick because it’s funny, loving and, well, kind of twisted. It tells you about love by putting different kinds of love in one picture.
Another movie I highly recommend is “500 Days of Summer.” As introduced in the beginning of the movie, it is “not a love story,” but it is “a story about love.” Although Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, the leading actor and actress, do not end up together as most of romantic movies do, the movie, with a wonderful soundtrack, tells a beautiful story of how we wait, face and choose for true love.
One function of a good date movie is to confirm to couple that they are right for each other. A “meant-to-be” movie like “Flipped” or “Love Me if You Dare” would be a good option. “Flipped” is a story about pure love developed since childhood. It displays every shining thing in love and makes you feel that love is the most precious thing in the universe.
Movies dealing with the fear of commitment and the dilemma of mid-age marriages, like “Up in the Air” or “The Descendants,” can also be alternatives for a date movie.
Love is not restricted to those men and women stories, love has many faces. There are a bunch of gay and lesbian love movies out there which are suitable for both gay and straight couples.
The most representative one is probably the “Brokeback Mountain.” As the tagline of the movie indicated, “love is a force of nature.” Couples are glowing in the crowd with this force of nature. It is a story about the love between two young men. It's truly a touching movie that shows the power of love.
Other love movies for gay couples include “Milk,” which is the biography of the famous gay politician Harvey Milk. And “A Single Man” in which Colin Firth provides an excellent performance as an English professor who has just lost his lifetime partner. The movie “Beginners,” which helps Christopher Plummer win an Oscar, is another good option. After all, we are all beginners in the course of love.
Many people believe that romantic comedies are the right choice for a perfect date movie, and some people argue that action movies are good options to bring excitements to dates. And animation is another safe choice for some couples. Though I have rambled so much about love movies, I think it really doesn’t matter what you choose to see. What matters is who you choose to watch with. As long as you have love, everything else seems less important.
