Lost in an endlessly growing queue and buried beneath thousands of rows of titles, there are these hidden gems of Netflix:
“Chico & Rita” (2010)
94 Minutes, NR
Animated movies aren’t only for children. The Spanish-language film, directed by Torro Errando, Javier Mariscal and Fernando Trueba, follows the story of talented Cuban pianist Chico (Eman Xor Oña) and the beautiful singer Rita (Limara Meneses). The two fall in love after an extremely fun and energetic opening scene. As time goes on, they grow apart and must rekindle the joy of their past.
“Chico & Rita” is an animated movie that is likely to be unlike anything you’ve seen before. The film has themes of love, lust, drugs, loneliness and betrayal. The animation is used to its fullest in this film. During the times of great excitement and joy, the colors pop and dance, which truly feels like watching music. When the story reaches darker places, the morose shades add to the gravity of the scene.
Although it is an animated feature, you may not want any children around watching it. However, if the child can appreciate the intimacies and nuances of love lost and love found and enjoys the exploration of the soul of a struggling and lovelorn artist, then maybe that child is mature enough to watch “Chico & Rita.”
Awesome movie you’ve already seen: “The Grey” (2011)
Need more Liam Neeson in your life? Need more wolves, too? How about a crushing sense of the inevitable demise of your mortal flesh? If you answered “yes” to one or more of these questions, then “The Grey” is the movie for you!
