Before Tracy Morgan jokes in slang and Josh Turner sings in twang, UF’s Alumni Association will throw a cocktail party.

The association is inviting alumni to stop by for the first-ever Pre-Growl Member Party, which is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today at Emerson Alumni Hall. The party is a new effort by the association to connect with UF alumni, said Karen Williams, a special events coordinator for the Alumni Association.

“We’re trying to figure out better ways to reach our alumni,” she said. “So many people come back for Gator Growl and are in need of something to do while they’re in town.”

The event will offer soda and hors d’oeuvres. There will also be a full cash bar.

There is no admission charge for members of the alumni association, but there is a $10 fee for non-members. All are welcome, said Brynn Cavanaugh, an associate director of membership and philanthropy.

“We just want people who are in town to swing by,” Williams said.

Cavanaugh said the association has received complaints about the lack of activities and facilities available to alumni who return to Gainesville.

“We’re just trying to open our doors and welcome our alumni back,” she said.
