Why in the world are we allowed to vote for president?

Take a look around you. Do you really want that guy to have a hand in deciding your future?

BuzzFeed published a post on Monday titled: “63 People Who Won’t Be Making A Difference On Tuesday.”

Author Katie Notopoulos took screen captures of pretty typical and average Twitter users who asked what they thought were important questions about Election Day.

Some key tweets:

“How do you know if your register to vote?”

“i wana vote next weeekend just dont know how to register :/ #wahh”

“@ladygaga It’s too late for me to register to vote, I’m so Dumb, I forgot :/”

We have no idea what excuse people had that allowed them to forget to register to vote.

Yes, we live in a college town. Yes, we live in a battleground/swing/targeted state, which means we are around politics possibly more than some of the other people in this country.

But presidential elections are every four years. This is a routine thing. This was not a surprise that snuck up on everybody.

The people on that list will not be voting in this election cycle; that’s pretty safe to say. Thousands more will, though. And you should want to be one of them.

We’re a generation who thrives on sharing all of our most personal news quickly. We take “deep” photographs of our coffee. We complain about our emotions and then complain when people offer to help. We share campaigns to take down evil, foreign regimes without ever leaving the comfort of our couches.

Someone decided a long time ago that we have a voice in our politics. We are an awkward and anxious generation, but somehow we have power and authority every once in a while.

It’s time to use it. This isn’t a call to arms. This isn’t a broadcast to the desolate-youth types of the world who think their voice isn’t heard. Because this is America, and for some reason we still have an Electoral College, our direct voice gets diluted through a couple bureaucracies before it’s actually heard. But it’s still our America. It’s our bureaucracies. We’re in charge of how our country affects us and every other country. It’s kind of like the “Gilmore Girls” theme song.

“Where you lead, I will follow.”

Foreign policy is like “Gilmore Girls”: fast-paced, confusing and full of references that you don’t understand.

Our country affects everyone around us, but sometimes we forget that. Make the responsible choice when you vote today (if you haven’t voted already).

Choose the local and national candidates who not only have your best interests at heart but who will also act responsibly on our behalf as a country as a whole.

Find some joy in your civic duty, but please take it seriously. There will always be fools on Twitter who rant about how dumb they are. Let’s be better than them.

You’re already ahead of the game. Not that Florida is a model citizen for anything, but we have the blessing/curse of being a sought-after state. We get to hear a lot of different sides from all of the candidates.
