A year after playing at the Swamp Restaurant as an unsigned artist, Miami native Cris Cab returns to Gainesville to play at High Dive tonight.
The 19-year-old is signed to Mercury Records with famous rapper/producer Pharrell as his mentor.
Connor Glenn, a 20-year-old public relations junior, said he was excited to hear Cris Cab is coming back to Gainesville. He saw the singer perform at the Swamp, and if he has time, he will attend the show tonight.
“Last time I saw him perform, he exceeded my expectations,” he said.
Cab said he is looking forward to the show because some of his friends from Miami go to UF.
“It’s cool to come back to Gainesville and see familiar faces and play music,” he said.
Cab traveled to 18 cities for The Rise Tour to promote his EP, “Rise,” which was released Oct. 9.
He described his sound as “a fusion of all different kinds of music — reggae, soul and hip-hop with some pop.”
This will be Cab’s third to last stop of the tour with stops in Orlando and Tallahassee.
He said Florida is a good place to end the tour because it’s where he grew up.
“It’s where a lot of my material comes from,” Cab said.
Local rapper Rezza will open the show.
The 19-year-old Santa Fe journalism and advertising sophomore said his roommate went to school with Cab, and he looked Cab up when he heard about the show.
“I like the whole style he does, and I like being around that environment,” he said.
He said it’s awesome to see someone the same age as him doing big things.
The 18-and-older show starts at 10 p.m. Doors open at 9 p.m.
