Gainesville Police responded to a call Wednesday morning about a man who shot himself in a Gainesville apartment complex.

At about 10:20 a.m., GPD officers arrived at the Hickory Place Apartments, 2323 SW 35th Place, and found the shooter, Fred A. Craddock, lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his head, said GPD spokesman Ben Tobias.

Earlier in the morning, Craddock, 41, and his girlfriend, whose name police did not release, got into an argument, Tobias said.

During the fight, Craddock pulled out a Luger semi-automatic pistol and shot himself in the head, Tobias said.

The woman called 911, and an ambulance rushed Craddock to Shands at UF for treatment.

Craddock was still alive when paramedics took him to the hospital despite his injuries.

“[He] didn’t look good at all when he left,” Tobias said.

Neighbors at the complex said they were close friends with the couple but did not want to comment on the shooting.

As of Wednesday, police did not know if Craddock died from the gunshot wound.
