A girl is never too old to be a princess, but maybe she’d rather be a pirate.
At a tea party Saturday at Haile Village Bistro, children and adults alike were able to play dress up at a princess- and pirate-themed event.
The tea was part of a themed event series hosted by the bistro. The restaurant hosts a formal English tea party on the first Saturday of each month.
About a dozen children sipped tea and munched on sandwiches — crusts cut off — at the bistro, while a performer sang Disney songs.
“We thought it would be fun to do something with the children,” said Jayne Yazdi, 52, co-owner of the restaurant.
She said the restaurant held a princess-themed tea over the summer, and the pirate theme was added so the boys would want to participate.
Angela MacKenzie, a 10-year-old Newberry resident, came to the tea in a long, white button-down shirt and a black, gold-brimmed pirate hat. Her sister, 4-year-old Marybeth, wore a floor-length white ball gown.
“I like the chocolate sandwiches,” Angela said, smiling.
Joe MacKenzie, Angela and Marybeth’s dad, said the tea was a nice event to attend with his daughters.
Families gathered around tables, some covered with blue and white teapots. When the event wrapped up, the little ones were carried out in their parents’ arms and bistro staff handed out small white gift boxes.
“This is exactly what I wanted,” Yazdi said. “To see all the people dressed up and the families come out together — that’s what it’s all about.”
