One Less Car Day will be celebrated campuswide

Trick-or-treating isn’t the only way to get candy today. Biking, busing, walking or carpooling to and from campus can earn UF community members treats for their transportation choices.

Workers will give candy to people taking part in the fifth annual One Less Car Day, a campuswide effort designed to promote alternative methods of commuting, said Michael Amish, program assistant for UF’s Office of Sustainability.

“It’s a day you pledge to not use a single-occupancy vehicle,” he said.

The impact is not limited to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, said Leslie Thiele, director of sustainability studies at UF.

One Less Car Day is an activity in which people learn about a program, realize it’s not as difficult as they thought and, therefore, make a simple adjustment to their lifestyle, he said.

“This could sort of have a snowball effect in their lives,” said Thiele, who likes cycling to work.

It’s important for people to work toward solutions instead of being part of the problem, he said.

English freshman Shannen Mitchell, 19, said the One Less Car program reinforced her desire to not have a car until she finishes college.

“There are other ways to get around than just using a car,” she said.
