UF police have arrested two suspects who claimed to have placed a bomb in Shands Hospital for Children on Tuesday. The suspects were placed under the Baker Act and are undergoing psychiatric evaluation. Their identities have not been released, according to the Act.
The suspects called UPD at 10:27 a.m. They claimed to have hidden a bomb on the third floor of Shands.
A UF Alert sent out through text message and email at 10:46 a.m. urged people to avoid the area.
The hospital was not evacuated due to the generic nature of the threat, UPD Maj. Brad Barber said.
No suspicious devices were found during a search of the hospital and at 2:46 p.m. UPD declared the threat a hoax through another UF Alert.
Police arrested the two suspects after tracing the phone they used and following nearby leads, Barber said.
Now, the suspects may undergo as much as 72 hours of involuntarily psychiatric evaluation according to the Baker Act before being charged.
