Tampa and Gainesville may be hours apart, but students can still keep up with the Republican National Convention.
The Gator Coalition for Civic Engagement and the Bob Graham Center for Public Service will host a screening of the convention at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in Pugh Hall’s Ocora Room.
“We’re hoping to start conversation about what people are thinking about the RNC,” said Kelly MacLellan, internal vice president of the coalition. “Our real goal is to get people thinking about the issues.”
The Gator Coalition for Civic Engagement is a new, nonpartisan club that promotes understanding of the government’s role in students’ lives, MacLellan said. The organization will screen the Democratic National Convention as well.
“Any student — especially students who maybe haven’t thought about the election previously — is in our target demographic,” the 21-year-old journalism senior said.
Thursday’s attendees can watch streaming video from websites like C-SPAN and CNN. Students can also register to vote using TurboVote, an online service that simplifies the absentee voting process.
“There may be a lot of people passing by who may have not even considered the RNC is going on,” MacLellan said. “Maybe they’ve heard more about the hurricane than the actual convention.”
