The Gainesville City Commission will select a new city attorney Monday night after interviewing six potential candidates.
Commissioners interviewed candidates for the position on June 26 but voted to delay the final decision until Monday.
The commission sought input on the candidates from the city’s charter officers, which include Gainesville City Manager Russ Blackburn, Gainesville Regional Utilities General Manager Bob Hunzinger, Clerk of Courts Kurt Lannon and Equal Opportunity Director Cecil Howard.
The new city attorney will replace Marion Radson, who is retiring after about 30 years of working with the city.
The city attorney’s office is responsible for handling legal issues presented to the city in state and federal courts.
The finalists for the city attorney position include David Schwartz, assistant county attorney for Alachua County; Jeffrey Sheffel, city attorney for Hollywood, Fla.; Vivien Monaco, assistant county attorney for Orange County; Daniel Nee, litigation attorney for Gainesville; Nicolle Shalley, a senior assistant attorney for Gainesville and a Community Redevelopment Agency attorney; and Cherry Shaw, assistant general counsel for Jacksonville.
A seventh finalist, Brian FitzGerald, senior assistant county attorney for Hillsborough County, withdrew from consideration.
The Monday meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
