A UF program that will help some students transition into their field of choice is once again accepting applicants.
All underrepresented second- and third-year UF students majoring in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) have until Friday to apply for Gator Launch.
Gator Launch is a program hosted by UF’s Career Resource Center that pairs students with professional mentors and offers activities to enhance professional development.
To apply, students must fill out an application form and submit a one-page essay and an updated resume, which can be done by email or in person.
The application form can be found on the CRC’s website.
After Friday, students will still be able to apply on a rolling basis.
“Gator Launch is a mentoring and education program that is designed to provide students with an opportunity to network with a mentor in one of the STEM fields,” said Gator Launch coordinator Kertesha Riley.
Members of the program will get a grasp of what being a professional in their field of choice is all about.
Gator Launch also aims to enhance students’ professional skills.
Christine Schaefer, a 21-year-old materials science and engineering senior, joined Gator Launch for the networking opportunities.
Students can converse with their mentors as often as they like either in person, by phone or by email, Riley said.
“My mentor taught me the business aspect of engineering,” she said.
Schaefer was accepted to Gator Launch for both her sophomore and junior years. She said she appreciated what the mentor program did for her.
“Gator Launch is a learning tool for students wanting to learn the basics of the industry and how to act professionally,” she said.
