This week, it’s all about recognition. We’ll be recognizing outstanding students. We’ll be recognizing outstanding organizations. We’ll be recognizing fun Gainesville events.
But it’s also about negligence. We’ve got negligent politicians, school boards and cellphone service.
That brings us to this week’s OK-so-maybe-our-attempts-to-connect-all-of-our-darts-and-laurels-is-futile edition of...
Were you unable to make a phone call Wednesday? Did your mobile web connection stop working?
If so, you’ll appreciate our OMG-why-can’t-I-post-about-how-boring-my-class-is-right-now DART at whatever caused the outage of Verizon Wireless and GRUCom services yesterday.
It was like the end of the world or something.
For receiving some the highest rankings from U.S. News for the state of Florida, we’re giving a keep-up-the-good-work LAUREL to Shands Hospital for Children at UF.
If your child or younger sibling is sick, Shands at UF is the place to be.
For voting in favor of giving wealthy Key Biscayne, Fla., students a better chance of getting into the district’s flagship high school while decreasing diversity, we’re throwing a way-to-win-the-race-toward-mediocrity DART at Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
Key Biscayne families offered $9 million toward expanding MAST Academy to about 1,100 seats, with preference given to Key Biscayne residents who meet entrance requirements.
Is $9 million worth diminishing the academic reputation of the school while straining the natural environment and endangering students by placing the expansion in a flood zone?
Independence Day might be a month away, but we’re giving an eat-funnel-cake-hate-yourself-watch-fireworks-feel-better LAUREL to Fanfares and Fireworks, which will be returning to UF after a lack of funding prevented the event from occurring last year.
The fireworks display will be July 3 at UF’s Flavet Field.
You’ve probably heard that Europeans are more open about drinking with their kids.
Perhaps there are cases when their openness might cause some problems. That’s why we’re throwing a this-beats-the-time-you-left-your-purse-at-101-Cantina DART at U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron, who accidentally left his 8-year old daughter in a pub a couple of months ago.
Perhaps Cameron had one too many pints.
For representing UF at this year’s National Hearst Journalism Awards Program, we give a one-looks-like-a-golden-boy-the-other-looks-like-a-creepy-ice-cream-truck-vendor LAUREL to Steven Gallo and Jon Silman, respectively.
Gallo won the National Championship in radio broadcast news, while Silman, an Alligator alumnus, won for writing.
Congrats, fellas.
Have a fun and safe weekend, and be sure to check back next week.
