It feels like the weeks are going by faster than the decline in Facebook’s stock price.
To give you any indication of how bad that sinking ship is doing, both Facebook founders Mark Zuckerberg and Peter Thiel have been selling their shares.
As with the end of every week, we bring you to our if-you’re-tired-of-hearing-about-Student-Government-just-wait-to-read-what-they-did-this-week edition of ...
First, for sponsoring the election code revisions we discussed Tuesday, we throw a do-you-really-think-restricting-the-free-speech-of-students-is-the-best-way-to-prove-you-aren’t-corrupt DART at Unite Party Senators Aundre Price (senate president), Logan Harrison (senate president pro tempore), Christina Bonarrigo (budget and appropriations chairwoman), Cayman Weimer (judiciary chairman), Katie Waldman (allocations chairwoman), Lauren Verno (rules and ethics chairwoman) and Hillary Webb (information and communications chairwoman).
What possible compelling interest can there be for constraining student speech (other than things like passing out fliers) to a four-week time period prior to each election? If SG is supposed to teach students what it means to govern, should its members not also abide by the limitations of the First Amendment?
If the U.S. Congress “shall make no law,” neither should SG.
Next up, because the election code revisions passed Tuesday night, we throw a congratulations-you-just-voted-to-restrict-the-free-speech-of-your-own-peers DART at the 39 senators who voted in favor of the revisions.
The Unite Party members should really be ashamed of themselves for approving this terrible piece of legislation. It appears that they are really doing all that they can to maintain their hold on SG while preventing as many alternative voices as possible from obtaining positions.
The university should be a place where free speech and an open exchange of ideas are welcome, not limited — especially by its own students.
For some more positive news, we give a turning-a-negative-into-a-positive LAUREL to Jennifer Smith. Smith was formerly homeless, but she recently became the women’s director for the House of Hope, an Alachua County organization that provides services to those recently released from jail.
Who better to help those in need than someone who has had firsthand experience with recovery?
Keep up the good work.
Finally, we want to give a the-more-the-merrier LAUREL to former secretary of state Colin Powell for saying that he supports same-sex marriage.
Although Powell is a moderate Republican, the more public officials who openly support same-sex marriage from each side of the aisle, the more we can hope that the country will eventually move in the right direction.
Have a fun and safe weekend, and be sure to check back next week.
