While preparing for summer break, this week’s weather felt like winter to some students.
Temperatures flirted with daily record lows Monday and Tuesday. Monday’s high temperature was 10 degrees cooler than the average 82 degrees Fahrenheit, according to The Weather Channel. Early Tuesday morning, temperatures plunged to 40 degrees — about twenty degrees cooler than average.
Zaaron Allen, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said a cold front last week caused the change.
“We came within a degree or two of reaching record lows last night in a few places in North Florida,” Allen said.
Allen said the front came in the form of a strong area of low atmospheric pressure, which results in rain or overcast skies followed by cool temperatures.
Although it is unusual to have cool temperatures at the end of April, Allen said that late spring cold snaps have occurred in the past few years.
Some welcomed the lower-than-normal temperatures.
Hannah Wong, a 21-year-old UF business junior, said she was pleasantly surprised by the cool weather.
“It’s kind of nice,” she said, “because I know it’s going to get hot really soon.”
