Florida’s state attorney announced Monday the state would drop charges against one of the 10 members of Alpha Phi Alpha who were charged with hazing in January.
William Cervone, state attorney, issued a case action report that dropped all charges against Bryan Mizell because the state didn't have enough evidence.
The nine other members of APA, including one alumnus, reportedly hazed five students.
The report named the following APA members: Metkel W. Beiene, 22; Chad W. Billington II, 22; Brandon T. Daniel, 21; Gregory J. Davis, 22; Jason A. Dubery, 23; Christopher D. Jenkins, 22; Dominique E. Martin, 21; Gary B. Terrell, 24; and Safo O. Agyemang, 26.
None of those charged are allowed on campus, according to a UF release.
The hazing began on Jan. 22 with hour-long beating sessions where recruits were hit with paddles.
The accused men hazed the five students with chores, slaps to the chest and paddle beatings, according to police.
UPD started to investigate when it received a complaint on Feb. 4. On Feb. 7, the APA national organization ordered the UF chapter to stop all activities until further notice.
Janine Sikes, UF spokeswoman, told the Alligator in February the university fired Agyemang and Billington, who were temporary employees.
“Disciplinary procedures will come as appropriate,” she said.
